The two lighthouses at Spurn – the “Low Light” to the left which is the older building, and the “High Light” to the right, up on the point itself. Both lighthouses are no longer in service, replaced by electronic navigation beacons.

The cooling towers of the mighty Drax power station populate the skies of East Yorkshire with their cloudy emissions.

Taken at Brough Haven a month ago (film takes time a-cookin’).

An analogue take on this.

It’s Been Forever Since

This one was taken in January this year – I stopped on the way to work one morning, arrested by the spectacular pink light cast onto the clouds from the rising sun. When I got down to the river I was thrilled to see the state of the water. The tide was high and the surface of the river was totally calm – my favourite conditions.

Chim Chim Cher-ee!

I took a short walk up from St Andrew’s Quay towards the old go-kart track. I thought it would be a challenge to stick with the 135mm prime, but nothing really inspired me. This was taken looking south across the river. Mostly processed using Photomatix. With a long lens on the camera the long shots are just too obvious – more effort required to see things differently.

Zephyr In The Sky

I spotted this nice bit of sky over the Humber on the way to work this morning.

My EF-S 10-22mm wide angle lens is currently heading west out of Morrocco on the Hull Freedom Trail and it feels like I’ve lost my right arm. It does mean I have the opportunity to try out my new eBay acquisitions. This shot was taken with a Russian made Jupiter 135mm prime lens that is built like a tank and smells like a mechanic’s overalls. However I’m blown away by its sharpness. I need to do some tests against the Canon EF 28-135 which is my usual lens for this range, but I’m pretty sure the Jupiter is going to come out on top for image quality - not bad at under £14 all in.

Here’s another view of the Humber Bridge in that incredible fog last Friday morning. I had the luxury of a little more time on this one. It’s had more processing and a more judicious crop, and for me it’s a better image.

Your Clouded Judgement

The fog rolling down the river this morning was awesome. I rattled off several shots, but this one grabbed me first, and there’s only time to process one before hitting the town tonight for a friend’s birthday drinks. More sunset pics to follow as well from tonight – another spectacle of nature, and quite different from the last few evenings.

Another of last night’s spectacular sunset – one of those that just keeps getting better as the sun goes down. I ended up taking about 65 pictures of maybe just three slightly different views.

There’s No Time For Dreams

I had to stop at Brough Haven again on the way home from work tonight. The sunset was a real corker. This long shot of the distant power stations belching their clouds smoke and steam drew my attention. As the sun sank below the horizon the lighting subtly shifted and altered. Of the many shots I took this one stood out from the rest due to the backlighting on those plumes. From left to right the three power stations are at Ferrybridge, Eggborough and Drax.
