One #3

It’s been a while since I went out with the camera – work commitments have been getting in the way. Me ’n’ the missus spent an hour wandering around the marina last night, hoping to get something of the sunset. The sun set further north than we thought it would - not over the river at all, so most of the marina itself was in shade well before sundown.

I was pleasantly surprised by this shot of Nº One, Humber Quays – the clean lines of the building and the sunset colours have given it an illustrated or CGI quality which I really like.

The Only Verdict

The back door (or western entrance) to the new St. Stephen’s shopping centre in Hull. It’s an easy shot, but that’s it out of the way. Next time I might be able to see past it and get something a little less obvious (security permitting).

A view of Hull’s KC Stadium from the empty “Executive Car Park” to the south. This was taken with my new polarising filter, which I picked up from fellow flickr member altitudezero at a recent meet.

Better Than One

A recently installed sculpture outside the new Logistics Institute at the University of Hull. The sculpture, entitled Moving Matter, was created by Joe Hillier and commisioned by the University to reflect the ambitions, vision and mission of the Institute. The two heads represent the interaction of minds and the human aspect of logistics.

Choir Of Angels

The Angel Choir in Lincoln Cathedral (which at one time was the tallest building in the world).

The cathedral is a great building. I took lots of pictures but wasn’t really happy with any of them. This one has grown on me since one of my Flickr contacts commented that this ranks with my best. The interior was technically very challenging – under expose the surfaces or over expose the windows. Ideally it needs double exposures or some decent off camera lighting. Either way more thought, time and kit required to make a really decent job of it.

Probably my favourite of this series from Newcastle. The Millennium Bridge on Gateshead Quays, with the Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art behind.

Hardly an original viewpoint, but it seems that access to the church yard is denied to the public most of the time which limits the options somewhat. This is Beverley Minster shot through the railings on fairly dull day – still managed to slightly over expose the sky on the right though.

Copperplateglass

Last Wednesay was the monthly meeting of members of the Hull pool on Flickr. Instead of just going for a beer we took a walk around the city centre with our cameras. By this time the light was failing so I took a quick detour down South Church Side to get my tripod from the car. Coming back I took this shot looking towards the mirrored building on the eastern side of Lowgate. It is infamous for the shot of Holy Trinity Church reflected in its windows which is a “must have” shot for every photographer in Hull. In fact you can see Holy Trinity’s reflection there to the left. The motley bunch stood at the bus stop are in fact a few fellow Hull flickrites plotting waiting for the stragglers to catch up before proceeding on the walk.

The sun was fairly low in the sky behind me, which really brought out that fantastic coppery colouring of the widows ahead.

Beneath The Dome

The doric or tuscan temple on Rievaulx Terrace in North Yorkshire. The incumbent toff nicked the mosaic floor from the choir in nearby Reivaulx Abbey and had it installed here. A gross act of vandalism, without which the mosaic would probably not have survived the ravages of time.

Some more photos I took at this location can be seen on flickr, including a couple of shots of the ionic temple and picture of Nunnington Hall.

You Can Do It

The B&Q Warehouse on St Andrews Quay in Hull. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm is a very wide lens, but on this occasion it wasn’t quite wide enoough. To achieve the effect I was after the top left hand corner was tweaked just a little in Photoshop to square it up with the edge of the frame.
