Open All Hours by duncmc

Scott Street bridge over the River Hull. The bridge was built in 1901, and was awarded listed status in 1994. Shortly afterwards the structure was assessed and found to be unsafe for vehicles. The bridge was fixed in the open position to allow free passage to river traffic.

The cost to restore the bridge would be around £5M, whereas demolition has been estimated at £100K - £125K. It currently costs £500 a year to maintain. Part of the hydraulic mechanism is below the high tide level, making it prone to operational problems and corrosion. As the bridge is not considered to be of particular significance, or a particularly good example of its type (a double leaf bascule bridge) then I expect its days are numbered.

You Can Do It by duncmc

The B&Q Warehouse on St Andrews Quay in Hull. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm is a very wide lens, but on this occasion it wasn’t quite wide enoough. To achieve the effect I was after the top left hand corner was tweaked just a little in Photoshop to square it up with the edge of the frame.

Parking spaces reserved for blue badge holders outside B&Q Warehouse on St Andrews Quay in Hull.

The complementary colours caught my eye, along with the various geometric forms.

The Pod on St Andrews Quay (West) in Hull. Carphone Warehouse this side, Jessops on t’other and Starbucks upstairs. It used to have a climbing wall inside, but I’m not sure if that’s still open.

Seafish by duncmc

The sun sets behind the Seafish Industry Authority’s offices on St. Andrew’s Quay (East) in Hull. The north tower of the Humber bridge is just visible in the distance to the right of the building, above the derelict lock gates in the foreground.

The lock gates are at the entrance to the now silted-up St. Andrew’s Dock, which was the main trawler dock in Hull until it was decommissioned in 1975. This must once have been one of the busiest parts of the city, but most of the dockside buidings here are now decaying and overgrown. The site is now earmarked for regeneration.

I took this picture in December 2006 and it featured in the BBC Humber Photo Galleries for that month.

Another shot from the arc building in Hull. This is an upshot of the forest of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels that provide power for the building.

Some Of Us Are Looking At The Stars by duncmc

Some Of Us Are Looking At The Stars from duncmc via flickr.

Following on from my previous post in which I extol the virtues of film and the qualities it brings to the image, I thought I would post this digital shot taken with the Canon EOS 300D.

Sometimes when I get a photo out of the camera and into Photoshop I am utterly amazed. It’s as if someone else took the picture when I wasn’t looking. This is one of those. The crisp, smooth detail and the colour just took me by surprise. To me this demonstrates the best qualities of digital photography, which are the antithesis of the organic qualities of film.

Incidentally this is a photo of the arc building in Hull, described as “a radical demountable and zero-carbon exhibition building”. The building has its own array of small wind turbines and photovoltaic panels which help the building to generate more energy than it draws from the National Grid. Heating is provided by a wood-pellet burning boiler.

More information is available on the arc web site here.
