Open & Closed by duncmc

Open & Closed from duncmc via flickr.

I‘ve shot it before and I’ll shoot it again. The crumbling Scott Street bridge in Hull, a grade II listed building which is too costly to repair (£5M) or remove (£125K), and is maintained in its state of dereliction by Hull City Council at a cost of £500 per year.

Dashing Across The Road by duncmc

Dashing Across The Road from duncmc via flickr.

I seem to have let things slip and it’s been a while since I posted. Last week the Hull flickr crowd met up for a walk around the Wincolmlee / Bankside area of the city. I wasn’t too hapy with the shots I took at first, but having started to work through them in Photoshop they seem to be shaping up quite well. This is one of the surprises – fairly bland image in the camera, but a bit of tonal work has really brought the sky to life.

Lock To The Dock by duncmc

Lock To The Dock from duncmc via flickr.

The view along Albert Dock in Hull, looking west from the lock gates at its entrance. HOTA’s lifeboat training facility can be seen to the right and the towers of the Humber Bridge are just visible in the distance if you know what to look for.

Albert Dock & Tower Blocks

Albert Dock & Tower Blocks by duncmc

Albert Dock & Tower Blocks from duncmc via flickr.

Hull’s Albert Dock taken from the “footpath in the sky” – the public footpath that runs across the shed rooves by the dockside. The orange lifeboats are part of the HOTA (Humberside Offshore Training Association) facility. The four suspended over the quayside are for practising ship evacuation drills, and the one at the top of the yellow tower is used to train for oil and gas rigs.

The buildings directly behind are the Odeon cinema (left) and the Ice Arena (right). The tower blocks of Great Thornton Street can be seen on the skyline to the right, with Hull Royal Infirmary just left of centre, and the two blocks off Porter Street to the left of that.

More detail can be seen in the larger version.

Shot from Island Wharf in Hull looking across the entrance to the Humber Dock basin (which leads to Hull Marina), with Victoria Pier beyond and the Deep looming in the distance. That’s the River Humber to the right.

Into The City In A Big Way

Into The City In A Big Way by duncmc

Into The City In A Big Way from duncmc via flickr.

This was taken at the end of the photowalk around Hull city centre with the folks from the Hull flickr group the other night. The shot was taken from the end of Victoria Pier looking back towards the ctiy and the mouth of the River Hull.
I have taken a few shots from this viewpoint in the past but I have never been very pleased with them. But this time I think it works. That’s the Deep in the centre with the lights of the docks and ferry terminal to the right. To the left is the Hull tidal barrier, with Victoria Pier in the foreground (also known as Corporation Pier).

Copperplateglass by duncmc

Copperplateglass from duncmc via flickr.

Last Wednesay was the monthly meeting of members of the Hull pool on Flickr. Instead of just going for a beer we took a walk around the city centre with our cameras. By this time the light was failing so I took a quick detour down South Church Side to get my tripod from the car. Coming back I took this shot looking towards the mirrored building on the eastern side of Lowgate. It is infamous for the shot of Holy Trinity Church reflected in its windows which is a “must have” shot for every photographer in Hull. In fact you can see Holy Trinity’s reflection there to the left. The motley bunch stood at the bus stop are in fact a few fellow Hull flickrites plotting waiting for the stragglers to catch up before proceeding on the walk.

The sun was fairly low in the sky behind me, which really brought out that fantastic coppery colouring of the widows ahead.

St. Mary’s Church on Lowgate in Hull. This is the city’s oldest church, with documentary evidence of its existence from as early as 1327.

Two Fifths Sky (40%)

Two Fifths Sky (40%) by duncmc

Two Fifths Sky (40%) from duncmc via flickr.

Here’s another photo taken from St. Andrew’s Quay in Hull a couple of weeks ago. I tried to take the same view as in this picture which is currently showing in the Three Quarters Sky Exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery. The exhibition is being run in conjunction with BBC Humber. Tonight the missus and I went to the official award reception. I must say I was impressed with the standard of work on display, although of the 49 works there were only five photographic exhibits, one of which was by fellow flickrite eyeseethings.

I didn’t win an award by the way, but the free buffet was gratification enough.
