Art… or just a trolley full of poo?

About

So you want to know more about Duncan McMillan, what makes him tick, and why on earth he thinks anything he has to say could possibly have enough merit to appear on a web site for all the world to see. And why have a trolley full of poo for a logo? I mean “dung cart” – what’s that all about?

By day I run Art & Soul – a graphic design and new media consultancy. So if you’re asking for a job description then designer, coder, illustrator, animator, technical advisor, problem solver, decision maker and flak taker pretty much sums it up. I also spend an inordinate amount of time fending off long-distance telephone offers of timeshares in Dubai, high tech stocks on the New York Stock Exchange, cheaper mobile phone contracts – the list goes on. If you want me to buy somthing from you, please don’t call me.

By night I play bass guitar in Rattlefish – East Yorkshire’s premier indie rock cover band. We play the pubs in the city of Hull and its surrounding area, although at my age I really should know better. After all, leaping around a stage in leather trousers is hardly appropriate for the over-40 and overweight. Well OK – I don’t actually wear leather trousers (and I am trying to eat more healthily).

In my spare time I take photographs. And really that’s what this blog is about. I rediscovered photography in a big way when I acquired my wife’s Canon EOS 300D (she upgraded) in October 2006. The first time I shot in RAW with a DSLR was an epiphany moment, and having spent the previous fifteen years as a professional Photoshop user and handling images on a daily basis I was more than equipped to take my photography to new levels. At the moment landscapes and architecture are my thing, and I have just started getting back into film photography (with more than a passing interest in lomography and lo-fi photography).

Most of my photos are taken in and around Hull and East Yorkshire where I live and work. I have a particular penchant for photographing the Humber Bridge, as will no doubt become evident from my postings as this blog develops. And I know it’s a cliche but what really interests me is seeing a good picture in the mundane and commonplace – finding beauty in the things we see every day and take for granted.

Oh, and the trolley full of poo? it’s art, innit – Dunc art.
