Albert Dock & Tower Blocks
15th August 2007
Albert Dock & Tower Blocks from duncmc via flickr.
Hull’s Albert Dock taken from the “footpath in the sky” – the public footpath that runs across the shed rooves by the dockside. The orange lifeboats are part of the HOTA (Humberside Offshore Training Association) facility. The four suspended over the quayside are for practising ship evacuation drills, and the one at the top of the yellow tower is used to train for oil and gas rigs.
The buildings directly behind are the Odeon cinema (left) and the Ice Arena (right). The tower blocks of Great Thornton Street can be seen on the skyline to the right, with Hull Royal Infirmary just left of centre, and the two blocks off Porter Street to the left of that.
More detail can be seen in the larger version.

When I walked up here with Emma I was not inspired by this view at all.
You’ve got a great eye for a shot. This is sublime.

Thanks Carl – to be honest it was the clouds and reflections that caught my eye. Under different conditions I might not have given it a second look.

I will need to try that on my pics in PS. So what exactly do you do on post? Do you tweak this in the levels?
God having a baby in the house has seriously impeded my knowledge of Photoshop and taking pictures!

Roland – I’ve PM’d you with a brief explanation of my technique.

I love this sky, absolutely brilliant. Did you use a polariser to bring the sky out like that? If so I’m stumped because you still get the great reflection in the water.
Any chance nutri grain might be interested in this sky for their next advert

scott, you don’t need to get a dslr to make pictures like this. Just patience and a good eye.
15th August 2007 @ 12:11pm
The “polarisation” of the sky was achieved in post-processing (using the red channel to alter the luminosity of the sky).
I agree that you don’t need a DSLR to get this type of shot, but I find the ability to shoot in RAW format indespensible when it comes to the post-processing that I do.

Are these HDR? The colours are amazing! I really have to get myself a DSLR!!

A wonderful shot. The reflection in the water and the sky just make this an amazing image.
