The Hunter

The Hunter by duncmc

The Hunter from duncmc via flickr.

The majority of content on here will be photos (that’s my intention anyway). To get me off to a good start my first real post is my favourite image from those I took last year.

This long exposure of the Humber Bridge on a misty December night revealed constellations in the southern sky with amazing clarity. The stars were not visible to the naked eye at the time the picture was taken.

You can cleary see ORION The Hunter in the centre of the sky. If you visit this photo on flickr the other surrounding constellations are also identified.

This photo was featured in WeeklyShot’s “Night” theme, and also in Vazaar’s “Best of 2006” theme. It is one of the images in my Humberscapes collection.

Great shot! Did you do much post-processing on this?

  2. Duncan McMillan says…

Thanks damon. There was very little post production on this. Orion wasn’t visible when I took the picture because of the mist over the river, but the long exposure allowed the stars to burn through. Other than adjusting the white balance in RAW and using a second exposure layer to enhance detail in the underside of the bridge, this is as shot.

Fantastic image, i don’t mind the amount of postpro, the modern photography is 50% camera 50% darkroom (PS).

Wonderful shot! Love this angle and the stars just make the picture nigh-perfect… Excellent stuff – it seems that Orion finds itself in a fair few pictures unlooked for. Faved!

    FANTASTIC!

I have just uploaded my first picture to Flickr, of, guess what?
Yes, you guessed it, a night shot from the opposite bank. Mine was taken on Kodachrome 64 using a Minolta Dynax 7000i and printed in my home dark room. Unfortunately, with a 14 minute print exposure, a lot of burning and dodging, I had only one chance of a result. I gave the print to my Mum who until quite recently lived only yards from the bridge. Before I gave her the print I scanned it for posterity. Not as nice as yours, but in the flesh still quite tasty.

I will be uploading more bridge stuff as soon as I can, especially as I now own a Canon 40D!

    Again, well done. VERY TASTY!

  35. Flickr: BigT_littleodd says…

Love this shot. Found this while wandering Flickr. With a 30 sec exp, how did you keep the stars from smearing?

  36. Flickr: duncmc says…

Dunno. There is a small amount of smearing at the corners, which you can only really see on the original.

  37. Flickr: DanPancamo says…

    awesome!
